Platforms or Pipelines? Where is the Value in Scholarly Communications?
The announcement of Plan S has created a shockwave in the discussions about Open Access among funders, publishers, editors, societies and individual researchers. APE 2019 offers a balanced review how this effects the process of science and will discuss solutions.
One thing is for sure: publishers cannot take their role for granted any longer. New platforms are emerging that may replace old workflows, lifting them away from publishers large and small. As well as funders, technology companies and governments starting to control parts of the scholarly communication network, large commercial players are also now operating parts of the pipeline. Is this well-overdue innovation to support the needs of researchers or should we worry about how this emerging infrastructure will endure the passing of time and not become a moment of enthusiasm by a few well-funded organisations?
There are many open questions and nobody really can predict how the world of scholarly communication and scientific publishing will look like in the years to come.
So there is a lot to talk about and we need to share experiences.
The APE 2019 Full Conference Program has been developed by a highly reputed Program Committee, guaranteeing internationality, actuality and topical interests.
Chairman of the Program Committee is Robert Campbell.
The APE Pre-Conference is organized by the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP)
Featuring a keynote address, two-panel discussions, and a workshop, the program will explore how we can continue to innovate while we ensure our solutions meet the needs of all stakeholders in the academic publishing space. We will address not only the needs of the main/traditional actors, but also those of less-recognized stakeholders whose perspectives are now rightly receiving more attention.
The APE Conferences aim at a better understanding of scholarly communication and the role of information in science, education and society. They encourage the debate about the future of value-added scientific publishing, information dissemination and access to scientific results and offer an independent forum for 'open minds'. Participants have enjoyed this very open atmosphere in the Academy of Sciences at the famous Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin Mitte since the beginnings in 2006.
Participants are: academic, educational, scientific, technological, medical, legal and professional publishers, university presses, researchers, authors, editors, librarians, teachers, learned and professional societies and associations, funding agencies, politicians and policy makers, subscription agencies and booksellers, recruiting agencies and technology providers.
Please contact us for more information or register for the Newsletter.
The Conference Dinner will be offered in the famous restaurant “Refugium”, under the French Dome on Gendarmenmarkt opposite the Academy.
Members of STM, ICSTI, ALPSP, SSP, Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels/IG Digital, DGI and Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI) enjoy a general discount of 25%. Group and academic rates on request.
